Projection: need to automatically qualify

Rhode Island’s résumé shows flashes that would please a committee but also glaring setbacks that make an at-large pass unlikely, because the Rams have signature road victories at Davidson and Dayton and a neutral-site win over Temple that prove they can win away from home, yet those high points are undone by damaging home losses to McNeese State and La Salle and ugly road defeats at Providence and St Bonaventure that speak to inconsistency and poor results against teams they needed to beat. The win at home over St Louis and a bounce-back victory against George Mason demonstrate quality when everything clicks, but a late neutral-site loss to Duquesne and additional setbacks in conference play leave the resume thin on elite scalps and fattened with bad losses that committees penalize. Given that mix of solid but not signature wins and several resume holes, the cleanest and most realistic path to the NCAA field is to win the Atlantic Ten tournament and lock up the automatic berth.
